Every blood draw, every lab test, every diagnosis that starts with bloodwork: a phlebotomist is behind it. This 110-hour program trains you to collect blood specimens safely and accurately, combining classroom instruction with real clinical practice, so you're ready to work in a hospital, clinic, or lab setting.
What the training includes:
- Blood collection techniques and venipuncture practice
- Anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology relevant to blood collection
- Infection control, safety, and OSHA-standard practices
- Hands-on lab exercises, including live blood draws
- Clinical training in puncture methods under supervision
- CPR/AED certification, included in the program
Requirements to enroll
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Comfort with hands-on clinical work involving needles and blood draws
What happens after you complete training?
You'll be prepared to sit for a national phlebotomy certification exam. Iowa doesn't
require state licensure to work as a phlebotomist, but most employers expect or require
national certification, so this is the credential that actually gets you hired. Phlebotomy
is also a common entry point for students planning to continue into nursing, medical
assisting, or laboratory science.
