Understanding Your Financial Aid Options
Our goal is to empower you to achieve your educational dreams without the stress of financial barriers. We offer various financial aid options, and our dedicated financial aid team is here to support you in finding the best financial solutions to fit your needs.
Financial aid comes in several forms, including grants, loans, and scholarships. Many of these options require you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Ways to Pay for College
Federal grants are "gift aid" that you do not have to pay back. They are often need-based and can be a cornerstone of your financial aid package.
Federal Direct Student Loans are low-interest loans from the federal government designed to help you cover educational expenses. These loans must be repaid.
These loans are available to students regardless of financial need. You are responsible for all interest that accrues during any enrollment, grace, or deferment period. The fixed interest rate for loans disbursed after July 1, 2026, is 6.52% for the life of the loan.
- Borrowing Limits: Dependent students enrolled full-time can borrow a maximum of $5,500 (subsidized/unsubsidized combined) during their freshman year and $6,500 during their sophomore year (after earning 28 credits).
- Independent Students: If you are an independent student and not required to provide parent information on the FAFSA, you may be eligible to borrow an additional $4,000 under the unsubsidized loan program.
Various organizations offer private student loans. A simple web search for "Private Education Loans in Iowa" can provide you with a list of these organizations.
The state of Iowa offers several grants for eligible Iowa residents, administered by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission (Iowa College Aid). The general deadline for filing your FAFSA to be eligible for state grants is July 1st of each year for the following award year, though some programs have specific deadlines.
Iowa Valley Scholarships
At Iowa Valley, we offer a variety of scholarships to help make your education more affordable. These scholarships are generously funded by the Iowa Valley Community College District, the Marshalltown Community College Foundation, the Ellsworth College Foundation, Ellsworth Trustees, and various local organizations, businesses, and individuals. Scholarship selection is based on criteria set by the donor, which can include financial need and/or academic ability. Any scholarships you receive will be applied directly to your student account.

Private & Community-Based Scholarships:
Many scholarships are available through your local communities and private sources. Check with your high school guidance counselor for community-specific scholarships. You can also use free national scholarship search websites. Be cautious of any service that charges a fee for scholarship searches.
Work-Study Jobs
IVCCD offers a variety of on-campus employment opportunities for students. The Federal Work-Study program is available to students who qualify based on financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. The Institutional Work-Study program is designed for students who do not meet federal eligibility requirements. Both programs provide part-time, on-campus positions, with students typically working up to 10 hours per week and earning the current federal minimum wage. To apply, students must complete a Work-Study Application and submit it to the supervisor in the area where they wish to work.
