Stop Campus Hazing

Hazing is any intentional or reckless act that involves a required activity and creates a risk to a student's physical or mental health, safety, or well-being. Such acts are carried out for the purpose of:

• Gaining initiation into an organization
• Securing admission into an organization
• Establishing affiliation with an organization
• Maintaining membership in an organization connected to Iowa Central, including extracurricular, intramural, athletic, academic, and social groups

A required activity is any activity that serves as a condition for initiation, admission, affiliation, or continued membership in an organization, regardless of whether a student appears willing to participate.

Examples of Hazing Include:

• Physical abuse, such as whipping, striking, or administering electric shocks
• Forced or pressured consumption of food, alcohol, or drugs
• Sleep deprivation or excessive physical exertion
• Confinement or exposure to extreme weather or environmental conditions
• Coerced participation in illegal, humiliating, or degrading acts
• Threats, intimidation, harassment, or other forms of fear-based pressure

Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including suspension, expulsion, loss of organizational recognition, and/or referral to law enforcement authorities.

How to Report Hazing

Use our Complaint/Feedback Form to submit any suspected hazing activity. You can submit a report anonymously or with your information, if you wish to be contacted. All reports are strictly confidential, your information will not be shared with outside parties and there will never be any retaliation for submitting a report. Anyone can submit a report, including staff, students, or a concerned third party.

Prevention Policies & Prevention

To eliminate hazing from campus culture, Iowa Valley has implemented the following prevention strategies:

• Mandatory hazing prevention training for athletes, leaders, and advisors
• Anonymous reporting form for students and staff
• No retaliation policy for any hazing report
• Required acknowledgment of hazing policy by all student organization members

Clery Act Compliance

Clery Act Definition of Hazing
Any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, regardless of consent, committed during initiation or affiliation with a student organization, that poses a risk of physical or psychological harm.

Examples Include:

• Beating, striking, or shocking
• Forced substance consumption
• Sleep deprivation or forced exposure
• Coerced sexual acts
• Criminal acts or threats

Iowa State Law on Hazing

Iowa Code §708.10 - Hazing
Under Iowa law, hazing is a criminal offense.

A person commits hazing when they intentionally or recklessly engage in any forced activity that endangers the physical health or safety of a student, in connection with initiation or affiliation with an organization at a school, college, or university.

Penalties:

• Simple Misdemeanor - General hazing
• Serious Misdemeanor - Hazing resulting in serious bodily injury
• "Forced activity" means any activity that is a condition of initiation or affiliation, regardless of the student's willingness to participate.
